Chapter 14

Summarizer
Scout eventually remembers thast she had asked Calpurnia to go to her place. But Aunt Alexandra dissaproves of it which leads Scout into anger,and Atticus makes her apologize.Scout ends up eavesdropping about Aunt Alexandra wanting to get rid of Cal,but Atticus won't give up on her.Later on,Jem and Scout find Dill under the bed and he had apparently ran away from home because he didn't feel comfortable there,they didn't satisty him.

In chapter 14 ,Dill ran away from home and hid under Scout's bed. When Scout steps on something and calls Jem for it they find out that Dill is under her bed !

Chapter 13

Summarizer

As Aunt Alexandra joins the family, she fits in like a "hand in a glove"(132).But Sout doesn't exactly think so,she doesn't approve of her Aunt's new rules very much. Aunt Alexandra wants Scout to act like a lady and Jem like a gentleman and when Atticus gives in and tells them to behave,Scout bursts out crying. As soon asw Atticus sees Scout he tells her to "forget it" (134).

Everyone in Maycomb in happy to have her there. Even Mr. Radley came to tell her that he is happy to have her here.She "fits in like a hand in a glove" (132).

Chapter 12

Summarizer
Since Atticus is away from town,Cal,Jem and Scout decide to do to church,When they arrive,a lady named Lula dissaproves of them beindg here.As much as Scout tells Calpurnia to got home,they stay.When it is time to collect the money,they don't have enough so they have to recollect.Apparently,Mr.Ewell's daughter was raped by Tom Robinsonin and he was put in jail.When they arrive home,they are surprised to find Aunt Alexandra on their porch,sitting in the rocking chair...

Summarizer

Jem and Scout are both frightened of Mr.sDubose because of her bitterness.One day Jem walks up to Mrs.Dubose's house and cuts all her camellia's down. When Jem donfesses what he did because Mrs.Dubose said Atticus "lawed for niggers and trash" (103).His punishemnt is to read to her every Saturday fot a month.Jem eventually reads and finishes his month.After a while,Atticus comes home to announce her death. He tells them that she was morphine addict and she had tried to stop before her death.

  2. Atticus says “’I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand’” (112). What do you think real courage is? Why is this an example of “real” courage?
  3. Mrs. Dubose was a morphine addict, have you ever known a drug addict? How did they act?
  4. Why did Jem lose his cool Mrs. Dubose? Was this acceptable? Is okay to lose your cool like that?

Chapter 10

Why does Miss Maudie help the children?
Do Scout and Jem understand things differently? How?
Why didn’t the kids know Atticus was a good shot? Why would he keep this from them?

In this chapter Jem and Scout have doubts in their Dad. They want something that they can brag to their friends about. When a mad dog in the street is seen and atticus kills him "with one shot"(97).Scout and Jem are both really proud.

Scout apparetly thinks that her father can't do anything anymore because he is too old. Suddenly,one day, Scout tells Calpurnia that she spotted old Tim Johnson and that he was sick. Calpurnia runs back in a hurry inside to tell everyone that here is a crazy dog ( who has rabbies) is on it's way.When Atticus arrives, he is told that it is his job to shoot the dog, although he didn't want to.Scout then learns something new about her father, he was the "deadest shot"(98) in Maycomb! Has Atticus been keeping something from his past from them?
